It’s the lament of the ages and probably a rite of passage to middle-aged parenthood: Complaining about the cost of groceries and nostalgically comparing the price of last weekend’s movie theater Icee ($9.99!!!) to the good old days, when the same dollar amount could cover a large drink, popcorn and the movie ticket. Wistfulness for bygone days aside, the basic cost of living in 2026 is genuinely alarming (take a look at the Urban Institute’s American Affordability Tracker if your own grocery bill isn’t scary enough) and merely suggesting that one should prioritize spending on “entertainment” feels somewhat glib in the light of even affluent Americans’ concern with rising inflation and decreasing spending power.
