As a pianist and writer, and an enlightening teacher and lecturer, Paul Roberts is one of the leading exponents of French music. Paul will immerse you in the advanced repertoire of the impressionist period with his engaging lectures and informative master classes.
Lecture: What’s So Special About Impressionism?
Paul Roberts argues for the unique qualities of Impressionist piano music and explains why it is so central to his musical outlook. This introduction to the Focus on Impressionism series of master classes will suggest that an appreciation of impressionism will enhance understanding of both the wider piano repertoire and the skills that are essential to its performance.

Performers
Focus on Impressionism will be limited to 4 performers. The tuition of $300 includes 2 hours of personalized master class sessions with Paul Roberts, admission to all other Focus on Impressionism classes and lectures, and admission to Paul Roberts’ recital on July 8. Classes will focus primarily on advanced repertoire from the Impressionist period. Interested participants should request an application form by calling 503.228.1388, or e-mailing lori@portlandpiano.org. Applicants will be required to submit an application form and a cassette/CD/DVD of their playing, including at least two pieces that they plan to play at the Institute. Applications should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than April 15. Applicants will be notified by April 30 if they are accepted into the workshop.
Auditors
The Focus on Impressionism is open to the public. Auditors may purchase a one-day pass for either July 9 or 10 or a two-day FOI pass that will admit you to all classes and lectures, July 9–10.
Admission to the Focus on Impressionism (July 9–10) is seperate from admission to The Young Pianists Institute and PianoFest.
